Internet of Things (IoT) – Opted IN

Old school thinking, “if it isn’t broke done fix it” is not an option!!!

APAC TEAM is a group of veteran sales guys based in Singapore with successful sales experience all over Asia. Let APAC TEAM (www.apac-team.com) be “Your A-TEAM in ASIA.”

When Microsoft decides you must have Windows 10, you get Windows 10. They were not asking if you want to “stick with what I have,” it just happens. You might get some warnings in the form of pop ups but the choice is made between machines. We are all opted into the IoT.

Welcome to the world of IoT as more and more devises are automatically connected to the internet and the sellers of these products opt us in and begin collecting data. Note, we are opted in once we buy or use the products and in most cases opting out is not an option.

The bulk of the discussion today is how the interconnectedness will be very positive as the human element is taken out of the equation. There has been minimal discussion of the trading off of “privacy” for “convenience” AND no discussion of opting out. It is just assumed by technologists and other experts that we all would want to be involved. And given the promise of all the benefits why not?

Clearly there is a civil liberties angle to the coming “opt in” nature of the IoT development. As we have learned over the last few years that even shutting off your mobile phone does not stop companies and / or governments from tracking your location. So will companies take a different view of participation or will regulators step in? Not likely, as there is tremendous value in the data – but who’s data is it?

Like every innovation there are positive and negative sides to the story. Proponents of the IoT focus on the positives. The ability of Google search data to forecast flu epidemics, the convenience of maps and other apps as well as savings from location based ads / discounts. Negatives have been exposed in the surveillance cases of recent years and by the spamming we all deal with on a regular basis.

As APAC TEAM helps IoT and Smart City companies bring their products to Asia, addressing these issues is part of our DNA. Connect with us to see how we can help you in Asia!!!
